Great Ormond Street Hospital Children's Charity
Welcome to the 2009 range of Executive Christmas cards and Calendars in aid of the Great Ormond
Street Hospital Children’s Charity.
Amazing things happen at Great Ormond Street Hospital every day.
The children we care for are referred to us from all over the UK and around the world. They have
complex, rare and often life-limiting illnesses and, as a result, we feel an enormous responsibilitiy to
focus everything we do on the needs of these children.
The wide range of specialists at the hospital are dedicated to providing leading edge clinical care.
Our research concentrates on finding pioneering treatments and cures which will benefit children
everywhere.
Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity needs to raise £50 million every year to fund this
important research, specialist equipment, accommodation for parents and to help rebuild and refurbish
the hospital.
For many families and children the hospital is a magical place that provides them
with hope. With your help we can continue to give the very best care to these remarkable children.
Please help us keep the magic alive.

Queen Elizabeth's Foundation
Dear Friend,
Not the end, but a brave new beginning ...
Suffering a brain injury can mean the end of a way of life but with the help of Queen Elizabeth's Foundation, many people go on to a brave new beginning.
Howard's Story ."I was 23 and looking back, my life was pretty complete; I was studying for a degree in computing at Kingston University, had a brilliant circle of friends, a family that was cool and a girlfriend I was truly in love with. It’s amazing how fast your life can be turned upside down."
Howard was diagnosed with Wilson’s disease, a rare, genetic defect which can cause severe brain damage, liver failure and ultimately death. "At first, I was just tired and lethargic, then the 'shakes' started in my right hand and my speech became slurred. I lost coordination and balance and became paralysed from the waist down. I realised that I had both physical and mental problems to overcome and that a long road of rehabilitation lay ahead.
"I came to the Foundation’s Brain Injury Centre in February 2005. The physical problems were relatively easy to tackle and I am now walking again but what I was unable to even recognise, let alone address, were the mental issues. My life had been derailed through no fault of my own and I was angry. I was a different person, one that even I did not know. A person that family and friends found it difficult to accept. The hardest thing I had to come to terms with is that I would never be the same again. The knowledge is still there but the manner in which I access information has had to be re-routed and the process is now much slower."
Howard has now returned home and is looking for a job in what he knows and loves best, IT. "Without the help of the Brain Injury Centre, I really do not know what would have happened to me. It has been a real roller coaster of emotions and the staff have been brilliant in helping me to re

RNIB
The Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) is the leading charity providing practical
support and advice to anyone with a serious sight problem.
Fifty per cent of sight problems are avoidable but every day, another 100 people start to lose
their sight.
For many people who have worries about their own sight or the sight of someone they know,
the RNIB Helpline, 0303 123 9999, is their first port of call. Dedicated staff provide a reassuring
voice, offering immediate information and advice on the options available.
RNIB’s pioneering work helps anyone with a sight problem, not just with braille, talking books
and computer training but with imaginative and practical solutions to everyday challenges. We
also fight for equal rights for people with sight problems.
We rely on your support to fund this vital work

Royal National Lifeboat Institution
Most of us spend some time on or near the sea, whether involved in leisure activity on the
water, travelling on a ferry or visiting a beach.
I expect you know of the work of the RNLI’s lifeboats and lifeguards in saving the lives
of sea users who get into difficulty. However, you may not be aware that we are
independent of government and we need to raise the necessary funds ourselves to pay
for this vital service.
I am delighted to be able to present you with the opportunity to help our fundraising by
purchasing these very high quality, personalised Christmas cards. The scheme is run on
behalf of the RNLI by Kingsmead Publications Limited. The prices are very competitive
and the RNLI receives a net profit of at least 20p for every card sold, which goes directly
towards our lifesaving work.
Please spare a few minutes to look through the catalogue.
On behalf of everyone at the RNLI and, in particular, our volunteer lifeboat crews, I offer you
my warmest thanks.
Yours sincerely
